Sendai in Progress Commences

For his new project, Sendai in Progress, Kawamata is working with the Teizan Canal, a waterway that runs along the coast in Sendai’s east, in an area whose villages and farmland were destroyed by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

While on a research visit, Kawamata was told by people living in the Shinhama area, which lies beside the canal, that they were experiencing difficulties because their bridge had been destroyed by the tsunami. Hearing this, the artist set his hopes on creating an artwork with the functions of a bridge.
